The Our Island Home competition, organised in conjunction with Architecture and Design Scotland, was opened to designers and architects in late 2013. The brief was to create a house which is easy, quick, and affordable to build and heat, helping young islanders make new homes in their island communities, and help community landowners to use their land to build affordable housing for rent and ownership.

We at Notio Studio took the competition as an opportunity to further our research into high performance architecture.

Developed with a fabric first approach to design we aimed to provide a dwelling that was cheap to run and easy to build. Based of the concept of a control core and constructed from prefabricated elements, our scheme balances quality of space with performance architecture and has minimal internal partitions creating an open plan living space to reduce cost and labour on site.

The form allows for a number of grouping combinations from the classic terrace to the creation of a courtyard for a space protected from the harsh elements on the islands.
